Missile - Space Command

       The Air Force Space Command is now responsible for all Department of Defense space and missile launch activities.  Three of it's seven Space Wings help defend the United States by maintaining ICBM missiles on alert.  They are under the administrative control of the 20th Air Force, but operational control of the U.S. Strategic Command, headquartered at Offutt AFB Neb.

The Air Force Space Command is responsible for all Department of Defense space and missile launch activities.  Three of it's seven Space Wings help defend the United States by maintaining ICBM missiles on alert.  They are under the administrative control of the 20th Air Force, but operational control of the U.S. Strategic Command, headquartered at Offutt AFB Neb.

90th Space Wing

F. E. Warren AFB, Wyoming.  Established as the 90th Bombardment Wing in 1950.  Redesignated the 90th Strategic Missile Wing in 1963.  Maintains 150 Minuteman III missiles and 50 Peacekeeper missiles. Four Strategic Missile Squadrons: 319th, 320th, 321st, and 400th.

91st Space Wing

Minot AFB, North Dakota.  Established as the 91st Strategic Reconnaissance Wing in 1958.  Redesignated 91st Bombardment Wing in 1963.  Received Minuteman Missiles the same year.  The Minuteman III replaced the Minuteman I in 1971.  740th, 741st and 742 Strategic Missile Squadrons.

30th Space Wing

Located at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., the 30th Space Wing is responsible for all Department of Defense space and missile launch activities on the West Coast.  All U.S. satellites destined for near polar orbit are launched from Vandenberg.  The space wing is composed of four groups: 30th Operations, Logistics, Medical and Support Groups.  The 30th Operations Group operates the Western Range and conducts space and missile launch operations. The Western Range, operated and maintained by the 30th Range Squadron, is a vast tracking, telemetry and command complex whose boundary begins along Vandenberg's California coastline and extends westward across the Pacific Ocean.   The 2nd Space Launch Squadron is responsible for all space lift operations.   Major associate units at Vandenberg include: 14th Air Force, 576th Flight Test Squadron, 381st Training Group, and Detachment 9 of the Space and Missile Systems Center.
