Activation
     Established as the 500th Air Refueling Wing and activated November 15, 1962 at Selfridge AFB, Mich.
Operations
     The 500th replaced the 4045th Air Refueling Wing.  It supported SAC bombardment and TAC fighter aircraft with air-to-air refueling and occasionally deployed segments of its tanker force overseas to support unit movements and special operations.
Status
     Inactivated December 15, 1964.
