Activation
Established as the 379th Bombardment Wing,
Medium on March 23, 1953. Activated November 1, 1955 at
Homestead AFB, Florida.
B-47 Stratojets and KC-97 tankers
The 379th replaced the 4276th Air Base
Squadron at Homestead in November 1955 and spent the next few months
becoming organized and manned. It received B-47s and KC-07s in
April 1956 and began training for strategic bombardment and air
refueling operations. Deployed at Sidi Slimane AB, Morocco,
March - May 1957. Transferred B-47s beginning in October, 1960.
B-52s and KC-135s
The wing moved to Wurtsmith AFB without
equipment in January, 1961. It received B-52s and KC-135s and
began conducting strategic bombarding training and refueling
operations. Redesignated the 379th Bombardment Wing, Heavy, on
January 9, 1961.
Vietnam
The 379th supported combat operations
in South East Asia with KC-135 aircraft and crews and with B-52
crews.
Status
Inactivated December 2, 1992.
Components
Squadrons
All four bombardment
squadrons flew B-47s. The 524th also flew B-52s.
524 BS: Assigned Nov 1, 1955 - June 15, 1993. Flew B-52Hs from
May 1961 until 1977 when
converted to the
B-52G.
