Activation
     Established as the 390th Bombardment Wing, Medium, on March 23, 1953, but not activated.  Redesignated the 390th Strategic Missile Wing (ICBM-Titan) and activated on November 28, 1961.  Organized January 1, 1962 at Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona
Titan Missiles
    The 390th was formed "from scratch."  Although some cadre came from the 303rd Bombardment Wing at Davis-Monthan.  The wing supervised and coordinated SM-68B Titan II intercontinental ballistic missile personnel training and facility construction, January 1962 to November 1963.
     The first Titan II missile arrived on November 27, 1962 and was installed in it's silo on December 8, 1962.  The wing accepted its first Titan II missile complex on March 31, 1963.  The 570th Squadron became fully operational on June 13, 1and the 571st Squadron on November 30, 1963.  The wing was declared fully operational on December 1, 1963.  The 390th was named as "Best Titan Wing in SAC" following missile combat competitions in 1969, 1970, 1974 and 1977
