Activation
     Established as the 301st Bombardment Wing, Very Heavy, on October 15, 1947.  Organized November 5, 1947 at Smoky Hills Air Field, later Air Force Base, Kansas. Moved to Barksdale AFB, Louisiana on Nov 7, 1949. 
B-29 Superfortress
     Flew B-29s and conducted strategic bombardment training and aerial gunnery training for other SAC organizations.  The B-36 was then coming into service, so all B-29 wings were classified as "Medium."  On August 1, 1948, the 301st was redesignated the 301st Bombardment Wing, Medium.  Deployed in England Dec 1952- March 1953 and in French Morocco Feb - April 1954.
Aerial Refueling
    In 1949, the 301st was one of the first wings to conduct aerial refueling operations.  It flew the KB-29..  
B-47 Stratojet
     Converted to the sleek new B-47 Stratojet in 1953 and traded in its KB-29 tankers for KC-97s.  Moved to Lockbourne (later Rickenbacker) AFB, Ohio on April 15, 1958.  Added electronic countermeasures activities to other missions in 1958 and soon devoted most of its activity to ECM work.  During this period, it flew the E-47.  Phased out the B-47 in 1964.  Became an air refueling wing in 1964 and received KC-135s..
Post Attack Command and Control
    Participated in the post attack command and control system from Marc 3, 1965 to June 30, 1966. 
Vietnam
       From c. June 9 to Oct 8, 1972, most of the wing headquarters staff, all tactical aircraft and crews and most of the maintenance personnel, plus support personnel in various categories deployed in southeast Asia, attached to other SAC organization.  A reduced wing headquarters remained in the United States to administer activities of the combat support group and hospital at Lockbourne AFB , Ohio.  From Dec. 19, 1972 to Jan 18, 1973, the wing repeated previous deployed condition on a smaller scale with deployed resources forming a provisional air refueling squadron in the Philippines.
